Safeway Update 2002

Safeway - Industrial Victory

The Victorian Branch of the AMIEU has produced a Newsletter on the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement
negotiations with Safeway.

As is reported in the Disputes section there has been industrial action by Meatworkers at Safeway. Before Safeway came back to the table with a new EBA offer there had been strike action by the people in the meat rooms in thirty stores and public action at ten different stores.

The industrial action convinced Safeway to come back with a different offer. All AMIEU members who are employed at Safeway received a Newsletter in the mail with the details of the new offer and a ballott paper to vote on the offer. You had the right to accept or reject the offer.

The VOTE was overwhelmingly in favour of the EBA offer achieved. 96% of the votes were to support the negotiated EBA.

TASMAN MEATS

Following the series of meetings held by the Union on 23rd August, the Union supplied Tasman with the following claims as a basis for negotiating a new Agreement:

*     Seniority clause giving preference to permanent employees over casuals

*     Re-introduction of 17½% leave loading

*     Triple time payments for Public Holidays

*     Redundancy to reflect F.M.I.A.

*     Guaranteed minimum weekly payment clause to reflect when paid

*     Introduction of Rostered Days Off

*     Long Service Leave to comply with Victorian Long Service Leave Act

*     Bonuses for labourers

*     Pay increases including extra increase for lower paid workers

*     Union right of entry

*     Union role at Inductions

Further discussions were proposed in relation to

*     Loss of 10% in wages Boning Room and ratio of slicers to boners.

*     10 hour days

*     Manning Levels

*     Method of calculation of Annual Leave payment.

In mid September Tasman announced that all its abattoirs (Brooklyn, Cobram, Yarrawonga, Devonport, Longford and King Island) and its feedlot were up for sale.

It has been agreed between the Union and Tasman that the negotiations for a new Agreement are best postponed to see if there is a new owner at Brooklyn.  A new Agreement to cover the workforce at Brooklyn would then be negotiated with the new employer.

Anyone who is not currently a Union member would be wise to join the Union now so that you are fully represented during this time.
