Safeway Update 2002

Safeway - Industrial Victory

The Victorian Branch of the AMIEU has produced a Newsletter on the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement
negotiations with Safeway.

As is reported in the Disputes section there has been industrial action by Meatworkers at Safeway. Before Safeway came back to the table with a new EBA offer there had been strike action by the people in the meat rooms in thirty stores and public action at ten different stores.

The industrial action convinced Safeway to come back with a different offer. All AMIEU members who are employed at Safeway received a Newsletter in the mail with the details of the new offer and a ballott paper to vote on the offer. You had the right to accept or reject the offer.

The VOTE was overwhelmingly in favour of the EBA offer achieved. 96% of the votes were to support the negotiated EBA.

May Day 2005

MAY DAY RALLY
Sunday 1st May

For more than 100 years May Day has been the International day of celebration of the working conditions that have been achieved through the continuing struggle of organized labour.

This year it is more important than ever that workers rally to show their commitment to protect their conditions from the unprecedented attacks planned by the Howard Government.

Some of Howard's plans are to:

1. Remove conditions from Awards
2. Lower minimum wages by changing the way they are set.
3. Use individual contracts to undercut existing rights and conditions.
4. Keep Unions out of workplaces and reduce workers' negotiating and bargaining rights.
5. Abolish unfair dismissal laws and redundancy pay entitlements for 3 million people who work in small businesses.
6. Reduce the powers of the independent Industrial Relations Commission to settle disputes and set fair minimum standards at work
The May Day rally gives AMIEU members a chance to demonstrate their commitment to protect their conditions. Members are urged to attend as a start to the ongoing campaign to defeat the Howard Government's plans.
Meet at the Union Office
62 Lygon St Carlton
For a BBQ at  1pm
Rally at Trades Hall  2pm
