Safeway Update 2002

Safeway - Industrial Victory

The Victorian Branch of the AMIEU has produced a Newsletter on the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement
negotiations with Safeway.

As is reported in the Disputes section there has been industrial action by Meatworkers at Safeway. Before Safeway came back to the table with a new EBA offer there had been strike action by the people in the meat rooms in thirty stores and public action at ten different stores.

The industrial action convinced Safeway to come back with a different offer. All AMIEU members who are employed at Safeway received a Newsletter in the mail with the details of the new offer and a ballott paper to vote on the offer. You had the right to accept or reject the offer.

The VOTE was overwhelmingly in favour of the EBA offer achieved. 96% of the votes were to support the negotiated EBA.

RENEWAL OF ENTERPRISE AGREEMENT

Following further discussions, the company has put a revised offer to the union.  Their revised offer is as follows:

1.             Union Picnic Day  removed or phased out over 3 years.

2.             Rostered Days Off  to be paid for by employees by either:  1/19th of each day's earnings deducted as a credit towards the RDO;  or

5% of the pay rise offered by the company used to pay for the RDO.  i.e. the 9% on offer over 3 years (3%x3%x3%) becomes 4% spread over 3 years.

Examples of this are provided below.

3.             Beef Tallies

a.              Increased to 21 low, 27 high.

b.              Rinse money removed.

c.              20 minutes added to sticking times.

Rates of pay and comparisons shown below.

4.             Hours of Work

Company wants ability to work 8 hours per day (chain time) on a maximum of 20 days per year to cover increases in orders.

5.             Audit pre op allowance for Q.A. $5.00 per day.

6.             Night shift labourer (driver) increase of $26.40 per week plus % increase in new EBA.

7.             Pay Increases

Subject to agreement to the above, pay increases of 5% in the first year, 2% second year, 2% third year.

8.             Current agreement to stay in force until new agreement reached.  However, if any industrial action is taken in support of the claim, the company have said they will review their position.

A general meeting will be held at 12 noon on Monday 4th December

to discuss the revised offer

RDO calculations and comparisons - pieceworkers and follow on labour

Current rates and tallies

Beef Slaughts               Daily                                        Beef Labourers            Daily

19 Low Tally                $129.49                                  19 Low Tally                 $108.12

25 Hight Tally               $185.73                                  25 High Tally                 $144.12

RDO's calculated on 1/19th of what is earned each day.  i.e. If you worked 19 days of low tally or 19 days of high tally the above figures are what you would get for your RDO.  Currently the RDO is paid without any reductions from the employee's tally earnings.

RDO's    -   Company's first proposition

The company's first proposition is that 1/19th of daily earnings be deducted and banked for your rostered day off, which would give the following rates.  The calculations below include the 5% pay rise proposed for the first year of the agreement, and increased tallies on beef.
