Safeway Update 2002

Safeway - Industrial Victory

The Victorian Branch of the AMIEU has produced a Newsletter on the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement
negotiations with Safeway.

As is reported in the Disputes section there has been industrial action by Meatworkers at Safeway. Before Safeway came back to the table with a new EBA offer there had been strike action by the people in the meat rooms in thirty stores and public action at ten different stores.

The industrial action convinced Safeway to come back with a different offer. All AMIEU members who are employed at Safeway received a Newsletter in the mail with the details of the new offer and a ballott paper to vote on the offer. You had the right to accept or reject the offer.

The VOTE was overwhelmingly in favour of the EBA offer achieved. 96% of the votes were to support the negotiated EBA.

      REDUNDANCY

Following discussions with the Union, Robert Frew has announced that the Company intends to pay all redundancy owing to ex Kyneton workers in three stages:

Stage 1

Packing Room and Sundry workers to be paid by the end of September 2004.

Stage 2

Kill floor workers to be paid by the end of October 2004.

Stage 3

Boners to be paid by the end of November 2004.

SUPERANNUATION

Frew has paid all Superannuation owing.

RE-EMPLOYMENT

Robert Frew has also said that if they are able to increase the work currently being done at Kyneton, any additional jobs created will be offered first to ex-Kyneton workers.

FAMILY TAX BENEFIT

Enclosed with this newsletter is important information for any Frew workers in receipt of the Family Tax Benefit.

Because most entitlements were paid to you on the last day of the 2003/2004 financial year, the current Howard Government may require you to pay back some of the benefits.

The Federal Labor Member for Bendigo, Steve Gibbons, has been able to persuade the appropriate Liberal Party politician to look into each individual case.  He has the power to waive any such debt.

If you are affected, fill in the enclosed form and return it to Steve Gibbons, or directly to Peter Slipper.

THE FAMILY TAX BENEFIT IS YOUR MONEY AND IT SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN FROM YOU BECAUSE OF YOUR MISFORTUNE TO HAVE BEEN DISMISSED BY FREW'S.

If any members have any queries in regard to any matter, please contact the Union Office.
